IRS paid at least $110 billion in improper tax credits

A U.S. Treasury Department report says the IRS paid at least $110 billion in tax credits to people who didn’t qualify for them in the past decade.

The U.S. Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration released a report on Oct. 22 saying that the IRS “improperly” issues billions of dollars of Earned Income Tax Credits (EITC) each year. The report challenged IRS estimates, and said the tax agency hadn’t made reduction targets required by law.
